GERMANY CONTRIBUTES 20 MILLION EUROS TO EAC TO SUPPORT IMMUNISATION PROGRAMME IN COLLABORATION WITH GAVI


The new Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Republic of Tanzania his Excellency Egon Kochanke presents his credentials to the Secretary General Amb Dr Richard Sezibera.

The Federal Republic of Germany through her country director of KfW, German Development Bank, Mr. Wolfgang Solzbacher signed a financing agreement of 20 million Euros with the East African Community (EAC) in support of an immunisation programme in the region that will be implemented in collaboration with the GAVI Alliance.

Speaking during the signing ceremony Amb. Dr. Richard Sezibera, Secretary General of the EAC and Member of the GAVI Board, expressed his appreciation to the Federal Republic of Germany for its support in saving lives. This is a very important and critical programme, and I am sure with such commitment, it will grow, added Secretary General

Ambassador Sezibera reiterated that the partnership and collaboration between the EAC and the Federal Republic Of Germany go back a long way and include among many others the support to construct the new headquarters of EAC.

The EAC Chief disclosed that the collaboration between the Federal Republic of Germany and EAC has evolved, and involved support to various domains but one notable support relates to child and maternal health especially in the area of vaccines.

In his remarks Mr. Wolfgang Solzbacher said that the new commitments underline that Germany continues to be a strong partner for the EAC, contributing to an integration process that puts the people in the centre

Earlier before the signing of financing agreement, the new Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Republic of Tanzania his Excellency Egon Kochanke, presented his credentials to the Secretary General Amb Dr Richard Sezibera as a representative to the East African Community.


Background

Since as early as 1998, Germany development cooperation, on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation (BMZ), contributes to the capacity development of the Secretariat of the EAC through a variety of programmes and projects.

Germany’s funding for Technical and Financial Cooperation with EAC amounts to about a total of 125.9 million Euros. Germany also provides substantial support for the health sector in selected EAC member states.

The GAVI Alliance is a public-private global health partnership committed to saving children’s lives and protecting people’s health by increasing access to immunization in poor countries.
